Alt-Az

Mount

Altitude-Azimuth, or Alt-Az, Horizontally oriented.

This is slewing around two main axis. The Azimuth is level to ground and turns around 360 degrees to cover a full circle around the mount.

The Altitude axis is slewing vertically, usually from 0 degrees, pointing straight to the horizon and up to 90 degrees.

This is the mount that most camera tripods or simple telescope mounts are made. With adjustable legs they are easy to level and can be pointed in any direction.

This is oriented in the horizon plane. This is level to the observer with zenith straight up and nadir straight down.

I have a simple but sturdy tripod with a ball head and 1/8" attachement for normal cameras. This works for most compact and DSLR cameras. Most pictures taken around Astroboden at night is with my canon powershot on a tripod.
